Blijkbaar zijn beide kampen hierin vrijwel gelijktijdig geslaagd en ondanks hun pogingen om een en ander geheim te houden is onze redactie achter de identiteit van enkele van hun topgeneraals gekomen. Wij willen onze lezers deze informatie zeker niet onthouden...

Appearantly, both sides have succeeded almost simultaniously in this effort and although they've been trying to keep things secret, our reporter has already found out the identities of some of their top-generals, information we gladly share with you...

OPENINGSZETTEN.
Alhoewel de Noordelijke en de Zuidelijke Generale Staven lijnrecht tegenover
elkaar staan voor wat ideologie en doelstellingen betreft, zijn zij
het over één zaak roerend eens: Virginia is de sleutel
tot de overwinning.
Wanneer de legers van de Confederatie er in slagen ten noorden van de
Potomac door te breken, Washington kunnen bedreigen en het land te vuur
en te zwaard dreigen te verwoesten, zal Lincoln wel verplicht zijn de
afscheiding van de “Rebs” onder ogen te zien. Wanneer echter
de Noordelijke legioenen Virginia kunnen binnentrekken, de graanschuren
van de Shenandoah Vallei platbranden en Richmond van de kaart vegen,
zal Johnny Reb snel een toontje lager zingen.
Het zijn de Yanks die het initiatief nemen: op 2 juli steekt de divisie
van Generaal Majoor Robert Patterson de Potomac over nabij Williamsport
en trekt op naar Martinsburg.
THE
OPENING MOVES.
Although Northern and Southern ideologies are very much opposed to one
another, both sides at least agree on one item: Virginia is the key
to victory!
Should the CS armies succeed in breaking through North of the Potomac,
threaten Washington and lay waste to the land, Lincoln will be forced
to recognize the Rebs' secession and sue for peace. But if the Northern
armies can conquer the Shenandoah valley as well as the rest of Virginia
and march into Richmond, Johnny Reb will have to surrender.
The Yanks move first: on July
2, Maj. Gen. Robert Patterson’s division crosses the Potomac River
near Williamsport and marches on the main road to Martinsburg.
Major General "Lawful Eddy" Edward Miles (US) is a "political" general. A lawyer by profession, he was elected to the Congress and - as so many of his colleagues - joined the army to beat the hell out of the Rebs.
Major General "Grapeshot Danny" Daniël Walker (CS) swapped his succesful woodmill for a career as a CS artillery officer, soon to be promoted to Rebstaff.
Jackson is ordered by Rebstaff to delay the Federal advance only, which he does, withdrawing before Patterson’s larger force.
