The books shown below are all classics, but they can still be very much of interest to novices, since they nearly all date from a period when wargaming was a small hobby, unknown to the general public and the authors therefor explain in a often simple but detailed way and with great enthusiasm the origins and mechanics of their hobby. You will have to shop around to find copies of these books: probably a hard nut to crack, but by no means impossible. Wargaming as a hobby has grown considerably over the last twenty years and more recent games & rules therefor take it for granted that the gamer is familiar with wargames in general. If this is not the case, these books will prove very helpfull indeed.

"WAR GAME TACTICS" by Charles Grant. A "background information" publication on wargaming. (Cassel ltd 1979 - b&w 192 pages).	"WARGAMING - ANCIENT AND MEDIEVAL PERIODS" by Don Featherstone. A number of battles of these periods pass the review. (David & Charles 1975 - b&w 143 pages)	"WARGAMING PIKE AND SHOT" by Don Featherstone. Pike & shot-battles for the wargamer. A must for people interested in this period. (David & Charles 1977 - b&w 160 pages).
"BATTLE NOTES FOR WARGAMERS" by Don Featherstone. Battles fron Ancient- to Korean War periods for the wargamer. (David & Charles 1973 - b&w 174 pages).	"WARGAMES THROUGH THE AGES VOL. 1 3000 BC - 1500 AD" by Don Featherstone. Cover many peoples of the period, including rules, tactics etc. (Stanley Paul 1972 - b&w 304 pages).	"WARGAMES THROUGH THE AGES VOL. 2" by Don Featherstone. Batlles of the early horse & musket-period for the wargamer: battle notes, points value of troops etc. (Stanley Paul 1974 - b&w 208 pages).
"WARGAMES THROUGH THE AGES VOL. 3 1792-1859" by Don Featherstone. An introduction to wargaming in the latter horse & musket-period. (Stanley Paul 1975 - b&w 248 pages).
