"AGE OF RIFLES WARGAMING" is situated in the post-Napoleonic era when the rifle replaced the musket as the main infantry weapon. The more powerful shot of rifles resulted in the fact that close-order formations were no longer practical and that cavalry became a less important factor and was mostly replaced by mounted infantry: riders who used their horses mainly as a means of transport and dismounted to deliver a volley at the enemy. In the same period even more powerful weapons such as machineguns and rifled artillery were developped. Battlefield-tactics changed, resulting in the static trench-warfare of the First World War, eventually to be dislodged by the appearance of the tank.
